Today's the big day for TLOMY, as he heads into theatre for his laminectomy at The Mater Hospital. Admission has been finalised; tests have been taken; anaesthetist has had his chat; and he has been taken off to wait for his turn under the knife.
So, here I am in Chloe's Coffee lounge, drinking a goat's milk latte, separated from TLOML in the real world, but still connected for a few more minutes in the virtual world by messenger. Not one to waste an opportunity to "connect", he sent me this lovely selfie in his operating theatre glamour shot pose.
He is seriously chilled, with a pulse heading down to the ridiculous at 58 and having most of the nurses and other staff in fits of laughter with one silly pun or joke after another. They have told me that the operation will take over two hours and I will get a call from the doctor when the surgery is over. Then an hour later, I'll head off to the ward and wait for him to wake up.
Of course, this is where I've made a foolish error for the newbie at this surgery game...or at least a newbie since the last 30 or so years. Back in the day when I was nursing, the patient was taken to the ward to wait for their turn. These days, you don't see the ward until you come back from theatre. So before anyone asks, I have no idea which ward he's on, and won't know till he gets there. In fact I won't know when he gets there until I make a call to find out if he's got there and where there is when he's there. Confused? Yep, me too!
What's even worse than that, I had sort of counted on chilling out in the ward while I wait for him to come back. So I have a few hours to kill in No-Man's Land before I have a home base. BUT THERE'S MORE!
Because I had counted on waiting on the ward, I had also counted on being able to charge my laptop and phone...DISASTER!
Anyone would think this was all about me, but I've got to tell you, I'm not good at waiting. I think I get that from Mum. The thought of sitting around with nothing to keep my mind occupied is frightening.
I might start thinking about "what ifs" and "how might" and all the other silly thoughts that a mind might have when it's unoccupied. Thankfully, prayers have been said and the Lord is with me and Brendan.
Spine Tingling Suspense part 3 will be coming to you after he comes out of theatre. Up until then, I might save the battery and find something else to do...maybe paint something inspiring.
